Amercham Workhouse

Gwyneth Wilkie spotlights on the officials of the Amersham Workhouse. This talk is on Tuesday 10th November at Bourne End Community Centre.

This talk, by Gwyneth Wilkie, concentrates on the people who ran the workhouse, what happened while they were in post, and their lives before and after.  What we might call career development has had scant attention from historians.

Inevitably within the small group of people running the workhouse with hardly any time off there were tensions and disagreements, particularly where spheres of authority overlapped. But much of what we can discover by looking at one workhouse can be applied to others as the same regulations applied throughout the system.
