20170713 centreTalks Cookham 1852Sorry you have missed this centreTalk. Cookham and Maidenhead are separated by acres of National Trust commons. In the early 19th century there was quite a battle over ownership and rights and the implications are still with us today.

Common Open Field agriculture, the norm in most midland counties, essentially ceased as the result of Parliamentary Enclosure between 1750 and 1870. In a small number of parishes, one of which is Cookham, there was huge local resistance to the change.

At least three attempts were made from 1799 to 1852 to convert the areas held in common. Success was limited to arable fields leaving some of the Commons unaffected to remain as open land for current public use. Commoners’ rights are still practiced today.
