Celebrating the 60th volume of Target and for June/July there’s a gift for every reader with an amusing and informative history of Slate Meadow in a four-page pull-out.

Also on the front page is good news for two local churches as, after a number of years, they both now have regular ministers to take services. More information is on page 26. Also in this very special issue of the community magazine are lots of great stories. On page 4 there’s inspiring pictures of young Meg at the end of the London Marathon. Then a talk that’s not to be missed as a local rowing coach transformed actors into rowers for a film about the 1936 Olympics team. Look out the ‘The Boys in the Boat’.

On page 6 there’s an invitation from Mankind’s barbers to join their fund raising team of paddlers over August Bank Holiday when they will paddle the 40 plus miles from Dorchester, along the River Thames, to the Bounty pub in Bourne End. Money raised goes to Breast Cancer Now in memory of a former colleague. Children feature on page 7 with a variety of animals in a delightful afternoon at the Community Centre. Wonderful to see fascinated reactions as they were able to touch and feel big spiders and huge snakes. The inquisitive iguana was a favourite along with a big tortoise that was very heavy.

Publicity for a postcard exhibition on page 10 promises to be a good day at the community centre when you can see how local streets and villages looked over a hundred years ago. Ken Townsend has kindly offered to display these postcards from his vast collection built up over a lifetime. Thank you Ken.

River Wildlife on page 27 talks about the mating season and the challenges faced by the swans and ducks as they face finding a safe nesting place with a very high river. Talented members of 1st Bourne End Scout Group are pictured on page 30 after an evening staged for supporters at their headquarters. I remember ….. on page 32 welcomes Nick Pink from Bourne End Motor Company to remember the cars and the motor traders from a photo taken at the end of the 1960s outside the newly constructed Community Centre. Does anyone still have the St Christopher given when a car was purchased from Bourne End Motors Ltd back then? On page 33 Councillor Penny Drayton tells readers about the boundary changes that come into force for 2025 and how our Independent councillors are facing the challenges. Well worth a read as we prepare to become Flackwell Heath and the Wooburns. But no change until 2025.

Past Times on page 36 finds out more about the Greens of Thomas and Green who ran Soho Mill and, by coincidence, included a war hero from two world wars and an escapee from Stalag Luft III which inspired the film of ‘The Great Escape’.

A good read for the start of summer with plenty of news from the community and a historic pull-out to keep.
